This past weekend, a team of LTN volunteers (including many first time volunteers) continued serving one of our neighbors by pitching in to fix her home. Here's a recap of their activities...
At 06:45 they were picking up supplies - yes, before 7 AM on a Saturday, when some of us would rather be sleeping in, this team was starting their serving day. The old garage door opener was replaced. A storage area was installed in the garage. Studs were installed in the basement (along with moisture barrier and insulation), The old over was removed (and a gas line plug was installed). Bathroom walls were removed and new ones were put up. Toilet was reinstalled and by 19:00 the bathroom was up and running!
Makes you feel like the "Extreme Makeover" team came through!
This kind of serving works best when you serve WITH the receiving family rather than just FOR them. BY including them in the process, it builds relationships and preserves their dignity. Most of the team had lunch together (can we say "breaking bread in community"?).
But, there is still more work to be done! The team is going back to Rachel's house in February and they would love any new volunteers to help finish projects like bathroom lighting, basement lighting, bathroom floor, replacing the camode, drywall work, plumbing, painting, and installing new oven.
Skilled labor volunteers needed and unskilled volunteers can/will be trained!
