Love Thy Neighbor Team - Year End update

Hi everyone, THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVING AND REACHING OUT TO THOSE IN NEED. This year you’ve reached out and served 13 different area families in need.

Bill Stark told of one home owner’s who said that we will never know what impact we are having on people lives. I’ve heard from some of the women above and how their lives have been around. They also talk about the relationships that are being formed through your serving. I know personally of a friendship being formed.

You may or may not hear of how these women have been impacted but they are. One of the women above said that she saw and heard from her neighbors because they were wondering what was going on. They were amazed to find out that a bunch of people were getting together to serve those in need. Our mission field is our own back yard and within our own neighborhoods.

Peace to you, your families, and friends during this Christmas Holiday when we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. Have a blessed Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Mark E. J

The Golfview Christmas Store!!

Many area friends and families served at our Christmas Store at Golfview School. A Christmas Store is a place were under-resourced families can get items for Christmas at a fraction of the normal cost. Tammy Massey did a great job of organizing this and serving hundreds in our community. Way to Go!

Stock the Storehouse - Party West Dundee

I had the priviledge of joining John and Nancy (Sarah and Amanda) Miles family this weekend for a Stock the Store house party at their house. They did an amazing job of inviting friends, neighbors and small group members to celebrate Christmas and collect toys and clothing for children in the area. All totaled they collected over 300 items!! Way to go Miles!

Stock the Storehouse - Final Numbers

It was great to see many of you last Saturday at the Salvation Army in Carpentersville!
Here is what we collected

PJ's : 111
Hats: 114
Coats: 83
Toys: 146
Gloves: 99
Misc: 105

For a total of 658 items that will keep hundreds of children in our area warm and blessed this Christmas season.

This total was added to all the other area's and numbers for South Barrington for a Grand Total of 51,000+ gifts for children this Christmas!

Willow Creek Christmas Services - Light

This year we are anticipating 80,000 people for our 12 Christmas Services called "Light".
We do have a free ticketing process so check at http://www.willowcreek.org/ and if the service you want is full, I will let you in on a little Willow Creek Secret....

If people are not in their seats 5 minutes before the service, ushers open the seats to anyone. I have found a seat (without having a ticket) everytime I have come.

Also, if you come early you can check with the ticket counter for returned tickets, I have also found some awesome up front seats that way too!

Hope to see you and your friends there!

Stock the Storehouse - Holiday Serving

This year Willow Creek Church is impacting our community by "Stocking the Storehouse." Willow has a rich history of caring for our neighbors and reaching out to share the love of Christ within our community. This year we will challenge our congregation, friends, co-workers, and others to respond to the needs of children in our community who are under-resourced.

We will be collecting the following NEW items (unwrapped and tags on) for children ages 12 & under:
□ Hats
□ Gloves
□ Coats
□ Pajamas
□ Toys (under $25)

This is how it works:
From now until December 13th you and your friends can figure out creative ways to collect the items, like neighborhood parties, work parties, table group or small group, or whatever works for you. See: http://www.willowcreek.org/prepare/ for ideas.

Then on December 13th, 9am-3pm, you take your items to the Salvation Army in Carpentersville (Meadowdale Shopping Center - The old Big Lots store).

We are partnering with the Salvation Army in Carpentersville who will be our Dundee Crown Area dropoff point for these items and they will distribute items to children in need in our community. If you would like to help with item collection or distribution at the Salvation Army, sign up for at: http://www.willowcreek.org/prepare/opportunities.asp

Please consider donating the above items as we partner together to care for those in need in our community. Thanks for considering this opportunity to make a difference in the lives of children this holiday season!

Willow Sermon Archive

Jim O'Brien from the Algonquin area has done a great job of summerizing a number of Willow messages on his online journal. He has been attending since 1982 - and is in process of summarizing all of his sermon notes since then. He is organizing them by date and topic.

If you would like to get a quick summary of a message just poke around his blog at:

Foundations Group

As we proceed on our spiritual journey, it is imperative that we have built a strong foundation on which to grow. Beginning Christians need to insure that the the "house" they are intending to build will sit on very solid ground. Growing Christians may have recognized that parts of their foundation need to be strengthened before they add on to their structure. Even Christ-Centered Christians may have discovered cracks in their foundation that need attention. If this describes you, please feel free to join Larry and Sue Kowalski as they dig deeper into "What Christians Believe" and "What Christians Do".

This open-ended 12-week study will be held in a small group format at a date and place to be determined. You can contact Larry and Sue via email at larry.kowalski@att.net or by phone at 847-836-9348.

Exchange Student - Dundee Crown

Rica Hamaan is currently attending Dundee Crown High School and living with a family in Algonquin. She is a delightful young woman, 16 yrs. old, from the Saxony region of Germany. She will be here until next July and will stay at her current host home until January. She is fluent in English, Spanish and German.

Her current family adores her and would like to host her the entire year but her exchange program requires a minimum of two families per student per year. We would like her to stay with her next host family a minimum of two months. Her host family must live in the Dundee Crown attendance area.

Rotary runs one of the largest exchange student programs in the world. We have an excellent training seminars and support programs for our students and their host families. Many of our students become lifelong friends with their host families, attending weddings and visiting back and forth after they return home. Hosting a foreign exchange student can be a wonderful cultural experience for the host family and the student.

Algonquin Area Used Toy Sale for Africa

Just think if you could leverage all your kid's unused toys and allow them to get some new toys all the while helping children in Africa! Well you can!

This year is the 5th annual USED TOY SALE FOR CHARITY and this year it is hosted at St. John's Lutheran School at 300 Jefferson Str. near route 31 in downtown Algonquin.

Here is how you can participate:

1. On Wednesday and Thursday, August 20 & 21 from 1 - 6pm in the activity center at St. John's (follow the signs), you and all your friends can donate toys to be sold at the sale by dropping them off.

Make sure to label each item (except stuffed animals) with a price. Children’s toys, books, games, puzzles, videos, or stuffed animals only (No car seats or clothes, please.)

2. On Friday and Saturday, August 22 & 23 from 9am - 4pm, you and all your friends can come back and shop with your kids for any toys they might want to get. There is also lots of other fun stuff like RAFFLES, CONCESSIONS, T--SHIRTS...and a comedy and magic show by professional entertainer, Pete Kovacevich, that will follow a fun, brief presentation by Bright Hope International (around 1 p.m.).

Last year we donated over $4600 to Bright Hope! This year we plan to raise money through this toy sale and send some Somolian refugee children to school in Nairobi, Kenya. We're excited to give our children the opportunity to sacrifice some toys so that other children can go to school.

Thanks for your part in serving the poor. We hope to see you before or at the sale!

Tammy Massey & Heidi Ames - Willow Creek Africa Trip Update

Hello from Johannesburg, South Africa!

We are on our way home now from Zambia, two planes down, two to go. We had a very relaxing weekend visiting some nearby falls, sang with a local church, and enjoyed the local beach on Sunday. Our last two days went very well and we ended the workshops feeling full--God definitely was at work. I think this trip will affect many people as the teachers go back to their classrooms and share what they've learned. You'll all get a more detailed letter (and pictures!) in the future but I wanted to thank you again for your continued prayers.

Take care,
Tammy

Tammy Massey & Heidi Ames - Willow Creek Africa Trip Update

Hi from Samfya!

God is blessing this trip to Africa in so many ways. Our goal was to build relationships with the teachers, encourage them, and give them ideas to use in their classrooms. The workshops up to today have far exceeded these hopes. We have shared and laughed, sang and danced, encouraged and empowered. The Samfya teachers have taked our ideas and made some amazing projects. We now have the weekend to rest and enjoy the area, with two more days of the workshops on Monday and Tuesday. Please keep praying as we finish the work we've been given.

Tammy Massey & Heidi Ames - Willow Creek Africa Trip

Hi all,

We do have access to a computer here so I'll try to send these updates a couple of times. We arrived in Samfya, Zambia on Sunday afternoon after 2 plane flights (one a 12 seater) and a 1 hour bus ride. We definitely are in a rural area. Many homes do not have electricity and are made of bricks and thatched roofs. We spent Monday touring the area including a couple of schools and planning for our workshop. Today the workshop started with dignitaries making introductions and a short speech. Then we spent time trying to get to know the participating teachers. Tomorrow we'll go more in depth. Please continue to pray as we grow our relationships and attempt to help them with creative ideas to get around the lack of resources.

Student Impact - Opportunities

Student Impact kicks off their school year ministry in just a few short Sundays, on August 24th! They have continued to grow in numbers over the past year and now they are in serious need of some great small group leaders!! Do you know anyone? Or maybe you'd like to meet with them and see if it's a good fit for you?

High school years are so difficult already, so it is critical to provide each student group with a great leader! Or would you like to serve in another way? They also have needs for greeters at the service, serving opportunity coordinator, and more! "I'm ready to donate my hair now, mommy." These were the words I longed to hear from my 6 year old daughter after waiting a very long time. Elizabeth has had her long hair since she was a toddler, and it just kept growing. We had talked many times about how some of her hair could be given to another little girl who cannot grow hair. She just wasn't ready to do it and I didn't want to force it. I wanted this to be her decision. Now after a couple of years of occasional nudges, Elizabeth decided on her own that she was ready to donate her hair. Out of the blue, she just said, "I'm ready to donate my hair now, mommy." My head jerked toward the back seat of the car and I asked her to repeat what she just said. I couldn't believe it. So, that same afternoon we drove to the Great Clips parking lot.

Thankfully, our favorite hair stylist, Monica was at the store that day. We found that Elizabeth's hair cut would be FREE since she was donating to Locks of Love. So, in four separate sections, 10 inches were measured and cut. I was a little worried Elizabeth would be regretful of her decision, but instead she was smiling the entire time and to this day loves her new do! It was a beautiful moment and I am so proud of her! And not only was the haircut free, but Great Clips also sent the hair to the Locks of Love organization on our behalf, so we didn't need to ship her donation either. They took care of everything.

Locks of Love is a public non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children under age 18 suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis. They take a minimum of 10 inches of donated hair to make a wig for those who cannot grow hair. They also send a certificate of gratitude in the mail confirming that they received the donation. I would encourage any young girls or women out there to donate their hair, if at all possible. It truly is better to give than to receive. Please check out the website and see if you might be a candidate. http://locksoflove.org/

Carpentersville Care Opportunity

There is a family living in Carpentersville with a mentally challenged adult daughter. She is in her mid thirties with some physical and mental disabilities. The family has been allotted funds from the government for 142 hours a month to have someone take her for some weekly outings. Nothing special, just a walk in the park or a little shopping, something to give her a change of scenery. This would be a part-time paid position. Maybe you know someone that would be interested in this opportunity.

Christianity Today Retracts Statements on Reveal

Christianity Today and its blog "Out of Ur" retracted a number of statements they made months back about Willow Creek and our conclusions from the REVEAL study. There has been much mis-information spread about Willow Creek and the REVEAL findings. Earlier this month I posted a youtube.com video where Jim Mellado interviewed Bill Hybels in regards to this mis-information.
As Christians it is aways great to see followers of Christ admit mistakes and humbly try to reach people for Christ. I think both Willow Creek and Christianity Today are doing that!!

Carpentersville - Blitz Build Project - Day 3

Wow!! It is happening again, people from all over our neighborhood have been converging in Carpenterville to be the hands and feet of Christ by building a home during Willow Creek's Blitz Build week.

This week Willow has 7 projects in 7 days with over 1700 volunteers! Check out our progress in just 2 days!

Today's devotional was from Matt. 5:6 - "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness for they will be filled."

The prayer team prayed for the volunteers and the requests they had, the hospitality team help feed the hungery and thirsty crew. They have a big appetite for lunch but it is nothing compared to their hunger and thirst for what is right and good! Today they lived out righteousness and we were filled.

Carpentersville Blitz Build - Prayer Team

Would you like to participate in the Blitz Build project this summer but just don’t feel like you have the right skills? Maybe your schedule won’t permit you to commit an entire day. If you have a heart for this project and faith as small as a mustard seed, the Prayer Walk team may be a perfect avenue for you to contribute. The commitment is small but powerful! Last year the team experienced God’s intervention in people’s lives, His provision for project needs at critical moments, and His hand of blessing on the whole project. Don’t underestimate the importance of intercession! Consider these words of King David:

“Commit your way to the Lord; trust in Him and He will do this:
He will make your righteousness shine like the dawn, the justice
Of your cause like the noonday sun.” Psalm 37:5-6

If you’re interested in joining me for the daily prayer walk, you need to sign up on the church’s website Blitz Build. If you want to pray for needs from home, please e-mail me at: nsvitacco@comcast.net and I’ll send regular updates of prayer needs.

Last year I took a mission trip to the Dominican Republic and it was amazing to see what God is doing through the local churches in the DR. One of the churches I visited was the IBCC - Igelsia Biblica Christana Consuelo. There I met pastor Leonardo and his leaders and saw the great ministry God has called him too.

I am so excited about this church that I want to go back there this coming November and I want to take you with me! We are looking at Saturday, Nov 8th through Saturday, Nov. 15th.

An Algonquin Neighbor's Reflections on the Solidarity Food Challenge

I am writing down some thoughts about the last week that I hope will be cathartic for me. I use to journal daily and at the time it was very therapeutic, but I haven’t done so in 6 years or so. This week’s challenge was the most spiritual thing I have done in years.

When I first started this exercise, I thought it would re-open a compassionate side of me that has been closed for a while. I knew it was closed and could see that I felt less compassion at different levels for some time, but I didn’t know why and didn’t know what to do to reawaken compassion. More pointedly, I didn’t know if I even wanted to.

I really thought going into this that I would be hungry a majority of the day. In reality I wasn’t hungry very often and when I was I was close to mealtime or close to bedtime. In that sense it was much easier than other fasts I have attempted. Those who know me know that I like simplicity, I don’t like cooking and that food preferences don’t often occupy my thoughts. What does occupy my thoughts is good nutrition, for me and my children. I was very concerned about Lydia getting enough nutrition to perform well and safely on the track team and with her riding lessons. I wondered if the children who grow up in impoverished areas are aware of what good nutrition is. If their mothers think about vitamins and minerals or if they are only consumed with worry about getting water and any food.

On Tuesday I forgot my lunch at work. I had a hard time concentrating on teaching my student and had word finding problems. But I also knew that at home within a few hours I could have a piece of tortilla to stave off hunger until dinner. I wondered what the woman in Africa does when she skips a meal. Can she keep working? Does she have an option to snack? I know I’ll never fully appreciate their challenges because I do have resources. I am different.

By Thursday, my workouts were getting lame. I was supposed to run a 30 min interval run. I did intervals, but they were walk run instead of run sprint intervals. I thought about the woman who was walking 10 miles barefoot to get water that morning. Did she have less energy than I? After her 20 mile round trip walk, did she have sore muscles from carrying the water on her head? How were her post work out recovery meals?

This week at work, we had 3 days in a row of additional food, from meetings, venders and celebrations. I did not participate in any of it. I decided that I should talk to my co-workers about what I was doing so they understood why I was passing on the food. It helped me stay the course knowing that others were watching me. I had many conversations about world poverty, what our responsibilities are and are not, what others can do to help, what we have tried in the past to do, how we have been burned trying to help others, etc., etc. A whiff of old passion stirred in me. I felt alive talking about poverty, compassion and interventions. I had everyone’s attention because I was the one limiting my consumption. Most of what I heard bothered me because it revolved around judgmentalism upon those who are “rich”. People think of themselves as exempt because someone else has more resources than them. But it’s all perspective. We have more than someone else, Others have more than us. I tried to make the point that all we can do is to change ourselves to become more generous, more aware, more compassionate. That it’s all about grace, not judgment. I think it was in vain.

After the week was over, I reflected on why I have been out of the “missionary” loop for so long. What has changed me from a charged up, optimistic, Jesus has the power to change you type of person to a cynical, skeptical and less reliant upon Jesus type person? I don’t have the answers yet, but my heart is still searching. I am once again hopeful that I will one day be the person that I wanted to be before... Before life taught me lessons of cynicism and complacency.

Lord hear our prayer,

Michele

CARS - Intern

We have an intern that is serving with us here at the CARS Ministry for two months beginning in June. He is a wonderful 19 year old from N/W Iowa who attends a WCA church there. He has been raised by a single Mother and his Grandfather who was big in his life just passed away.

He has done a year of automotive studies and his church have taken an offering to get him here. I am needing a home that will take him in and look after him for the two months duration of his internship.

Our shop is in Elgin but he has his own transport so any area would be considered. He is hoping to be with a family with kids his own age but that's not that important...just food and a bed would work.

Please call me if you know of someone who could help.

Thanks,

Sleepy Hollow Neighbor - Day Care info and opinions

Hi neighbors, I am hoping you can help me. I thought you might be able to help me or direct me to someone who could help us. I am having a difficult time trying to find the right preschool for my children.

I want it to be Christian based, relatively close to our home, and reasonably priced. Do you know of a good pre-school or have any recommendations. We live in Sleepy Hollow.

Thanks for any help.

In Christ,
Molly at: molly_quinn5@hotmail.com

Shoji's Solidarity Food Challenge Journey

Last night I thought I would be passed out by now with my fears of having health issues around not eating enough. But God is giving me a strength beyond myself and showing me that He is enough and teaching me so much. I have anxiety around food when I am not able to eat at the right times because it has gotten me hospitalized once before because of the medications I was taking. But God is healing all those negative beliefs and giving me more freedom and faith.

2 Corinthians 4:7-18 was right on last night for me. "But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us. We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed but not in despair; persecuted but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed. We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body. For we who are alive are always being given over to death for Jesus sake, so that his life may be revealed in our mortal body. So, the death is at work in us, but life is at work in you. All this is for your benefit, so that the grace that is reaching more and more people may cause thanksgiving to overflow to the glory of God. Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal."

What an awesome experience we are partaking in! We won't even see the full eternal impact right now!

Dundee Crown Area Baptism

Congratulations to Mary Comeaux of Algonquin on her Baptism last Wednesday night at Willow Creek Church. I did a their Baby Dedication last fall and Mary and I talked about her getting baptized. She really wanted to do it but was a little nervous about doing it in front of all the people at New Community. This was a huge step for Mary in identifying with Christ and growing in her faith. Way to go Mary!!

Mary and her husband Richard have two beautiful children and are neighbors of the Idsteins.

Reasons for World Hunger and Poverty

At our last all Neighborhood dinner one we came up with a list of reasons we thought the world struggled with hunger. I’ve condensed it and this is the list we came up with:

Corruption, Politics, War
Distribution of Wealth & World Apathy
Too many people for the amount of land
Land not Fertile
Natural Disasters (Drought, Floods, Earthquakes, etc.)
Lack of Infrastructure (Roads, irrigation, transportation, etc.)
Lack of Education
Sickness and Disease
Cost of Food increasing
Land Management - Land is converted from food crops to Bio-fuel crops.
Climate Change
Poverty Trap

Here are some of the top reasons I found in some research (The End of Poverty - by Jeffrey Sachs, on my bookshelf lower left). You may have also heard Nancy Beach’s message this weekend that had some great information on this topic.

Poverty Trap - all a person’s income is put toward food and a person can’t save.
Geography - Land locked countries, poor natural resourcesGeopolitics - Political turmoil, etc.
Inability to advance Technology
Lack of Infrastructure (Roads, irrigation, transportation)
Economic failure
Distribution of wealth and world apathy

As you can see many of your answers are right in-line with what some of the experts are finding. You all are really aware! It has been a very exciting weekend at the church, I am looking forward next week to identifying with the poor by participating in the 5 day solidarity challenge and then making an immediate impact by serving at the Dundee Crown - Feed my Starving Children event May 3rd-4th.

Reflections on our Area Dinner Last Night

Last night we had our all area neighborhood dinner. It was really great to connect with you and see you there! And the food was probably a bit of a surprise for many of you attending. Last night we got into the world of someone who does have enough food to eat. We replicated the “Feed My Starving Children” (brown rice and vegetables) food and everyone was limited to about one cup and there was only water to drink. We then spent the night talking about world hunger and many of the issues surrounding this topic.

I would love to hear how it affected you. What kind of impact did it make? What kind of feelings did it invoke? Did you learn anything?

I am sure many of you took it in stride, you saw this as a warm up for next week when Pastor Bill Hybels has challenged us all participate in the Five–Day Solidarity Challenge, April 21–25. Eating only foods like: Rice and beans, oatmeal or cream of wheat, vegetables and little bits of chicken or fish. It will be a big challenge but I am looking forward to it and seeing how it affects me.

Maybe some of you had a bad day yesterday and coming to the dinner did not quite meet your expectations. My daughter Priya said, “Mom, this is not a party like we had last time, there are no desserts!” Then she came to realize that there was only rice to eat and water to drink! At about 6:15pm, I am sure some of you heard her in the back of the room throwing a royal fit because she “does not like just rice and begetables” (she doesn’t always say her v’s). And you should have seen the look on her face when I told her the cookies were made with dirt (see “dirt cookies”). She thought I was completely out of my mind. I love children because you can pretty much tell exactly how they are feeling. Maybe you can identify with Priya, you had a long hard day and this was not exactly what you were expecting and internally you had a little fit.

Maybe some of you were not really aware of some of the facts about hunger in our world. I will be honest, I had no idea it was such a big problem until I read the book, “The End of Poverty” by Jeffrey Sachs. It is a insightful book that I would encourage you to read. I had no idea that about 2.7 billion people in our world live on $2 a day or less. 2.7 billion people is nearly half of the world’s population! That is just nuts! Then to find out that the things that keep people from food are not overly complex. Things like roads, transportation of food, and irrigation are solvable problems.

I am excited that Willow Creek Church is identifying with those suffering around our world. I am even more excited that we are taking steps to make a real difference. I am stunned that over 700 people have signed up for our “Feed My Starving Children” event in the Dundee Crown Area! This is such an awesome community to be part of.

Whatever feelings this night invokes for you, I challenge you to ask God what he is trying to show you in all this? What is he teaching you? Those questions are why we engage in spiritual disciplines and sacrifice on behalf of others. For in this God often speaks.

Knock, Knock... Mormons are at the Door!

I have talked to a number of people in our area who have encountered Mormons coming to their door. Have you had a similar experience? Have you known that feeling that creeps up when you see them coming with their white shirt, dark coats, ties, and name badges?

Recently I met with two Mormon missionaries at my house at least 5 or 6 times over a span of about 3 months. It was very interesting and I really learned a lot about the Mormon faith. How would you like to have a couple of insights and next steps to make you feel more comfortable and confident the next time they come knocking?

Proper Perspective
A great way to show Christ in us and give hospitality is to have them sit down and give them something to drink. Even listening to their presentation for a few minutes is fine. But keep in mind, you will probably not change a Mormon’s mind about their faith but you can change their minds about Christians. Be Nice!

Preparation
Maybe you’re uncomfortable inviting them inside because you’re intimidated and not prepared to handle what they’re going to say. Or you might just be too busy. The first time they came to my house I was busy with kids and was not prepared to talk with them, so I just chatted for 2 minutes and then asked to make an appointment to talk at a later time. If you are interested in talking to them more, make sure you prepare. If you really don’t want to talk with them feel free to tell them you are secure in your own faith as a follower of Jesus Christ and are not interested in talking further, but be very hospitable yet firm.

A Different View of God
One card they try to play is that they are like any other Christian denomination, but then I asked them why they were talking to me because I am already a Christian. I think they see themselves as the real Christians and the rest of us are in need of correction, but they are not really open to correction themselves. They are not another Christian denomination; Mormonism was started because no other church was acceptable to God, according to Joseph Smith (founder of the Mormon faith) and what he claims God told him. Denominations might choose to declare their distinctives, but the issues that divide them are less serious than the very different claims of Mormonism. One very clear example: Mormons believe many gods exist in the universe (Jesus, the Father, and the Holy Spirit are separate beings; and God the Father also had a father, who had a father, etc.). Since the very beginning of Christianity, Christians have believed in one God (who had no beginning, no parentage, no partner, and who was not a human first before he became a god). The Trinity is not three gods with one purpose; it is three Persons co-existing in one Godhead. Students of Mormonism have pointed out that technically, Mormons seem to be closer to Greek mythology (with its multiple, human-like gods) than Christianity with our one and only one God. Mormons use much Christian terminology in their belief system, but mean very different things once you unpack the beliefs.

Propaganda
What it all came do to for the Mormon missionaries and their beliefs was a matter of blind faith. They just believe without questioning. I told them one of the things I really love about the true Christian faith is that it is both Faith and Reason (Acts 17 - Paul reasons with the Greek non-believers). When my Mormon friends were pushed on many of Mormonism's odd beliefs or differences between Mormonism and the Bible, like the Trinity, the three-ness in one Godhead - they just ignored it and said it didn’t really mean that. And they just went into the "I believe in Mormonism because I just believe" mode. Not really helpful, because we could all say that about our faith and then there would be no real dialogue.

Questions To Ask Mormons - Take the ball and start asking them questions about Mormonism be genuinely interested in their story but try to get them off their standard pitch. Things like:

1. “Are you really open to other truths and alternate points of view?” Unfortunately, I the guys I met with were not really open. When I asked them if they would change their beliefs they said “no”.

2. “Have you ever thought about changing your beliefs? Why or why not?” After all, they go door to door asking you to change your beliefs but are they willing to do the same?

3. “What areas of the Mormon faith do you struggle with?”
The missionaries I met with said they did not struggle with anything in their beliefs. That does not seem authentic to have absolutely no questions or struggles with faith. That sounds like blindness.

4. “If I don’t agree with your beliefs are you going to stop coming?” Unfortunately, after about 5 or 6 meetings, the Mormons that came to my house stopped meeting me because I wouldn’t believe as they did.

5. “Why should I believe the Mormon writings as scripture?” Again, they just believe because they believe. They say God gave Joseph Smith these writings and that is it. That is so different than our Bible (see “The Historical Reliability of the Gospels” - by Craig Blomberg).

6. “What do you think about the Trinity?” Mormons don’t believe in the Trinity, they believe in many gods. That is not the Christian faith. I have a great illustration you can use to show them the difference; it is called the “play-dough” illustration.

If you ever have more interest or need more help give me an email. I have actually met five or six Mormon Missionaries in the area and know a couple by name. You can tell them you attend Willow Creek Church and Ryan Boldt is the area pastor for your area. I will gladly come over and help you talk with them. I have other resources as well, if you need them.

A great next step in getting more familiar with the Bible and why we have confidence in it is our Biblical Literacy Classes. We even have trainers in the neighborhood that will train people in our area. See the blog entry below (Mar. 24th) about Biblical Literacy!

Baby Barbieri Finally Arrives!

Welcome Evan Cody Barbieri. Weighing in at 9 pounds 12 oz and 22 inches long, Evan arrived Sunday evening at 11:07 (8 hours before Kathy was to be induced!) Momma and baby are doing well and expected to come home today. Her husband Brandon called from Afghanistan where he is serving our country to wish her well.

Kathy & Brandon are true heros!!

Thanks to all the folks in the Sleepy Hollow area for rallying around Kathy and family. You have made a huge difference in God's Kingdom and in the life of some new creekers!

Video All Area Dinner - February

This is a little video of our last all area dinner. One of our local Dundee Crown area students, Christian Stilwell, made this for us and did a really great job! Easter Poem from an Algonquin Neighbor

LAMB OF GOD

Christ carried the weight of our sins, upon the cross, all eyes on Him.
He wore a crown upon His head, of blackened thorns, by which he bled.
Crude tormenting, by evil men, persisted ‘til the very end…

Mt. Calvary, besieged with crowds, who madly cursed His name out loud.
Above His head for all to view, they hung a sign: “King of the Jews”.
They kicked at Him, spit on His face, and offered wine of bitter taste.

Impending death loomed deep within, the thieves on either side of Him.
But Jesus told them not to fear, for Paradise was drawing near.
Christ’s body pierced; blood, sweat and tears, was crucified, darkness appeared.

Alarmed in part for what they’d done, for surely this was God’s own Son.
The third day came, His flesh no more, the stone removed before the door.
Afraid at first - - How could this be? Who stole their Lord? Who would believe?

Confused and scared, Christ then appeared, to comfort them and quell their fears. He spoke the truth, so they would know, the words to share with every soul.
Hearts filled with joy and inner peace, no longer blind, they now believed.

They did as Jesus told them to, in pairs they traveled with the news,
That Jesus rose up from the grave; alive, He’s in our midst each day!
In every heart and hungry soul, His love and mercy freely flows.

Today, the same as yesterday, Christ showers us with endless grace,
And in return for all He’s done, we’re called to serve and share His love.
Each precious life worth fighting for, all in the name of Christ the Lord.

He gave His life so willingly, a selfless act to set us free.
Let’s glorify Christ’s Holy name, with prayers of thanks and songs of praise.
May all God’s children celebrate, the Lamb of God this Easter Day!

Sleepy Hollow - A Baby Shower of a Different Kind

A Baby Shower of a Different Kind that will make a BIG impact!

Who: Kathy Barbieri
When: March 1, 2008 Open House from 1:30 – 4:00 p.m.
Where: 2733 Winton Court, West Dundee
What: Here is the “Different Kind” part.

Kathy’s husband is serving his second tour of duty on the front lines in Afghanistan. Except for short periods of leave, he has been away from Kathy and their two boys (ages 2 and 5) for 3 years. She is due to deliver her their 3rd boy on March 17. Her husband Brandon will be home April 12th.

With 2 young boys at home, Kathy says she does not need anything from a clothing or equipment perspective, but could use some meals to get her through the last few weeks until the baby comes and her husband returns.

So this is a “freezer meal baby shower.” Please come for cake and coffee and let’s rally around this neighbor whose husband is serving to keep us free and fill her freezer with “Meals for 3.” Please prepare your favorite meal as a shower gift. Be sure to include cooking instructions and use disposable storage containers.

Going Green with Brandi in Dundee Crown

God said man should rule over the earth (Genesis 1:26). The earth isn’t just this massive blue and green globe. It is the awe and beauty that God created for us! We have inherited it and we are leaving it for all of God’s children. Your respect for God’s creation will be a legacy not soon forgotten. So, what does “green” mean? Here is what some of your neighbors do that inspire me and a few practical tips you can follow and some on-line resources to help get you there.

At a neighborhood table gathering, the hosts set up separate trash cans for “trash”, recycle-able items, and “plastic plates and forks”. What an encouragement for those of us who don’t want to throw away “perfectly good” plastic plates and serving-ware.

Wave to my friend at Woodman’s on Monday’s who not only brings her 3 yr old and 1 yr old, but also packs up the reusable bags for her groceries too.…my neighbors have an annual used toy & book sale to benefit African orphans. Why have a company manufacture something brand new, utilizing materials and energy, when you can just wash a “used” item and it is like new!

Some practical tips that make a big difference purchasing food. When possible, buy food in God’s packaging, rather than man made. Convenience foods are horrible for the environment, not to mention your health. In addition, produce need not come packaged in a hard shell or have Styrofoam underneath. Single use items come with unnecessary packaging. Buying heavily used items in bulk is a great way to save on packaging. Just because we recycle the item, it still takes energy to initially manufacture it and then to recycle it into another item.

Eat less meat. The resources needed to raise livestock, including feed, water, fossil fuel and land, dramatically surpass those required for raising vegetables and grains. As concerns for profitability grew, the space used for raising animals shrank, which has resulted in animals being exposed to high levels of toxins from too many waste products in too small an area. Runoff from farms threatens crops grown nearby.

On a more personal level, the health benefits of a plant-based diet can't be ignored. Heart disease and many cancers have a direct link to meat consumption. When packing a lunch, use reusable plastic. It’s just as easy to put a container in the dishwasher, as it is to put a plastic bag in the garbage. When cleaning your house, use non-toxic products that are safe for our atmosphere and you! If something causes cancer and harms air quality…why not opt for a kinder, gentler product that doesn’t give you a headache when you use it? Trust me; you don’t need a different cleaning product for every surface of your home, either! Be creative! There are many alternate ways to use everything. From egg cartons to the cardboard box, sour cream container, or the “other” side of the paper. You can get more use out of items before discarding or recycling. So now you know me, I’m the mom who cuts the commercial napkins in threes when I’m not using a washable cloth. I clean with diluted vinegar, and when I buy detergents, I make purchasing choices that reduce environmental impact by buying plant based ones. You’ll see me walking to the gym (weather permitting) or trekking the kids to the neighborhood strip mall when we are out of something. Say hi and let me know about your tips on going green!

Saying Goodbye to Randy Frazee & Gene Appel

This weekend's service was both a happy and sad time. The announcement of Randy Frazee and Gene Appel both leaving and their words to the congregation were very sobering and penetrating. It seems that we just got these two guys! But then I realize Gene has been here five years and Randy over two. Where in the world did the time go? I think that is evidence that I am getting older!

When I first read Randy's Books "Connecting Church" and "Making Room for Life" about five years ago, I really resonated with the ideology. It brought me back to my childhood, my hometown, and my family. So his leaving is naturally sad. But the thing I realized was that the ideology does not reside with one person. If an idea is right and true and good, then we can live in that idea independent of who our current teaching pastor is. For me the neighborhood ideology has become reality. There is no going back now. I cannot. My neighbors and the community of Algonquin have become my way of life. Most of our closest friends live here, my children's friends live here and since we live here, we are part of this community.

Also, we are happy that Randy, Rozanne and family get a great opportunity to continue their ministry in another great church. We will miss them and wish them God's blessings.

I have not had as much of an opportunity to work with Gene Appel, which makes my next statement even more amazing. Ever since the first time he met me years ago he has remembered my name! Not only that, he remembered things about me, like I had children. Of all the leaders I have been around at Willow, Gene has been the most authentic and joy filled. I am sure Gene had a number of rough days but his joy, the joy of the Lord, was truly his strength. I am really going to miss that and him. But we are joy-filled for the church that Gene and his family land at. They will be truly blessed.

Finally, the Lord is teaching me about faith. We must have faith that God will guide us in the midst of change. Change happens and sometimes it makes us sad but we also need to put on our glasses of anticipation. We are looking to God to make His next move within Willow Creek church. That should give you some excitement and joy as we know that God is guiding us. We just need to trust, and that trust is called faith.

If you missed this weekend's service and announcement click here to see the note from the Willow Creek elders.

Meeting Neighbors at Freecycle

This is a great website and highly relevant to your neighborhood! Freecycle is a site organized by town or area and you can post messages about things you want to give away or things you might need. It is kind of like a Craig's List for free stuff. I recently signed up at http://www.freecycle.org/ for the Algonquin area and posted a message to offer a baby crib. I got 3 people interested in just a couple hours. I also offered a chair we no longer wanted and again within hours of posting it a nice couple came to our house and picked it up! Even more amazing as we talked in my garage I found out they live one sub-division away and knew a bunch of people we knew! But wait it's even more amazing, this couple had just gone to the Imagine Christmas Service at Willow Creek with some of their Willow Neighbors and loved it!

So, if you want to meet some folks from your neighborhood... try giving something away!
